Directed by Prathap

THE LAYA life
For his new work, Prathap selected a special creative team to guide and explore different types of folk drums such as parai and dhollu kunitha. Alongside Praveen D. Rao, Viveick Rajagopalan, Charu Hariharan and BC Manjunath, Prathap experimented with composition and performance by folk traditions where the music derived intuition from classical traditions. We are looking forward to seeing this project develop into an exciting show, where the edginess of folk performances and the precision of classical structures unite for the stage.

A Tale of Two Drums
In this piece, commissioned by Beeja and performed by DHIM KU THA KU, Prathap enables a conversation between the parai and mridanga. Prathap gives each drum a voice by teaching them a common language via konnakol. The performance highlights Prathap’s brand of injecting energy into performances especially through collaboration.

Anoushka shankar quintet
Prathap has been performing with Anoushka Shankar Quintet since 2021. Anoushka Shankar also invited him to be part of The Brighton Festival in 2025. This collaboration further underscores his role as a leading figure in contemporary Indian classical music, as he brings his rhythmic expertise to performances that celebrate Indian and Western musical fusion.

Invited to perform at the BBC Proms, Prathap showcased Indian classical percussion, playing both ghata and kanjira. One of the world’s most prestigious performance stages, this performance highlights his contributions to world music.
LIfe in progress
Sylvie Guillem’s tour de force, Life in Progress, presented a unique piece called Technê choreographed by Akram Khan and with live music. This piece was lit up by Prathap’s mridangam and enjoyed international success on hallowed stages such as the Sydney Opera House, the Tokyo Theatre, and Epidaurus Theatre. More than anything else, Prathap is grateful to have worked so closely with such titans and for such influential works to form his sense of performance and aesthetic.

Over the years, Prathap has accompanied a number of celebrated Carnatic artists at London’s Darbar Festival. In that time, he has cultivated a reputation for extraordinary skill on the mridanga and ghata, along with an uncommon energy and aesthetic sensibility that elevate every performance he is part of.
Alpaca 2025 Festival:
The Geometry of Rhythm
A work on the Carnatic concept of yathi or geometric representations of rhythm, specially created for the Alpaca festival. Prathap used projections to visualise the rhythmic structures of carnatic music, exploring and merging different yathi’s.

Rhythm Yatra
Prathap’s band, Rhythm Yatra or “Rhythm’s Journey” shows the most vibrant and energetic aspects of Indian Classical music. Displaying intricate musical patterns, internationally renowned percussion artists come together to present a unique sound inspired by Prathap’s vision. As a percussion ensemble, it offers a thrilling listening experience uniting the genres of classical, jazz and avant garde.

WORLD RHYTHM PROJECT (MUNICH)
Prathap collaborated with Indonesian gamelan musicians, merging South Indian percussion with the rich sounds of Indonesian gamelan, but also konnakol with beatboxing. This cross-cultural project highlighted his versatility and commitment to creating a global dialogue through music.
CROYDON COMPOSERS
Croydon Composers is a pioneering, cross-genre music project led by Shri Sriram that pairs local musicians, from classical to hip-hop, to create original collaborative compositions. Prathap has brought in original ideas on rhythm and cross-cultural work and has created several innovative tracks.

Polyrhythms
In Polyrhythms, Prathap created original work adapted for Western audiences in collaboration with composer Ned McGowan. This performance at Stanley Arts showcased the intricate layering of Indian rhythms in a way that was accessible and exciting for Western audiences.

TRIKONA
Trikona is an exciting new blend of energy, rhythm and melody inspired by concepts and patterns of Indian classical music and jazz, liberally sprinkled with virtuosic improvisation by a band of internationally renowned musicians. Produced by Drum The Bass and led by award-winning composer, musician and producer Shri Sriram on bass, bansuri & FX, Trikona brings together the creative brilliance of Prathap Ramachandra on ghata, morsing & khanjira, Kousic Sen on tablas, Prakash Ramachandra on mridanga, Rod Mason on saxophone & keyboard and Asaf Sirkis on drum kit & percussion.

ROOH - Within her
As part of Urja Thakore’s production Rooh - Within Her, Prathap’s compositions delve into themes of identity and femininity, underscoring his sensitivity to thematic storytelling through music.
SHREE
A solo dance production by Seeta Patel, exploring the embodiment of Earth as The Mother, we see Her birth, nurturing life, witnessing her destruction, and calling for salvation. The percussion landscape by Prathap carries the intention of the work through rhythmic storytelling.

Qatar’s Fifa world cup commission
Prathap was invited to perform at a special commission for the FIFA World Cup in Qatar, representing Indian classical percussion on an international platform and adding his unique sound to the global celebration. One | All, performed at “Festival of Motion” during the World Cup, and created by dancer and choreographer Mythili Prakash, used the concept of myth to examine the nature of competition itself and challenge society’s need for a winner.

VARDARA
In Vardara, an original work commissioned by the Construct Europe Festival, Prathap brings Indian percussion to a European audience, showcasing the versatility of Carnatic rhythms in exploring cross-cultural themes and narratives. He explores the theme of water and rivers using ghata, konnakol and creating a melodic landscape.
ON THE BANKS
Commissioned by Stoke-on-Trent Pottery Museum, On the Banks is an original work by Prathap that reflects the cultural heritage of Stoke-on-Trent through a Carnatic rhythm lens, highlighting his ability to blend traditional sounds with thematic storytelling.
